Anesthesia excellence used to be judged solely on the ability to put patients to sleep and wake them up, but in today’s consumer healthcare environment, the experience begins in pre-op and extends to post-op pain management and communication.
Anesthesia must have a customer service mentality through the entire process. It starts with pre-op communication about what to expect and how to prepare. In the OR it means bringing the latest techniques such as nerve blocks that decrease recovery times and lead to better post-operative pain control. After the surgery it means being there when the patient wakes up, thoughtfully answering questions, and putting together a plan to manage pain after the patient goes home.
