When talking with ASC physician and administrator leaders from across the country, we always ask what pain they are feeling from their anesthesia service and which issues they are planning to address in the coming months. What we often find is that they are looking to alleviate a small pain point while the anesthesia challenges that are most disruptive often go unchecked.
The most common concern we hear? Anesthesia scheduling.
Specifically, centers struggle to find coverage when an anesthesia provider cancels last minute due to an emergent event, or they are frustrated by a lack of flexibility when there is a need to change start times or accommodate an add-on case. Administrators describe this issue as “reliability” or “flexibility” whereas surgeons call it “unnecessary day-of-service cancellations.”
Regardless of what you name it, scheduling is the biggest pain point, but rather than prioritizing fixing it, many centers are focused on problems they deem easier to solve.
In a new content series, our team will address the anesthesia pain points we have identified through conversations with center leadership – and of course, we’ll make recommendations for addressing and fixing each one. In addition to the topics above, we talk about credentialing, data, adding higher acuity cases, following center protocols and more.
